The metropolitan area of Budapest has an exceptionally large public transport system. As well as MAV-Start, the Budapest Metro and Trams (BKV) there is an extensive Budapest Suburban System (BHEV-Budapesti Helyierdeku Vasut). Details of the system is included in Volume 2 of STARS Tram & Urban Light Rail Stock Book series. The lines were included in the Budapest City & Suburban Tours in 2018 and 2022, both proved to be an immense success. The tour comprehensively takes in all five lines, all depots and museum. When not on BHEV territory you will have the opportunity to trawl trams, metro, and surface MAV as we travel.

Our base for the tour will be the Ibis Styles, Kelenfold, which was an extremely popular choice with the participants of the Hungarian Railtour in 2024. The hotel is less than a ten-minute walk from Kelenfold station.

Free transport travel in Hungary for the over 65’s is again available on ALL public transport throughout Hungary. For all the younger members the best means of travel for the duration of our visit will be the economical Budapest Three Day Public Transport Ticket. This ticket cost is not included in your tour fare. Individuals will be responsible for arranging their own travel to and from Hungary.

Remember- do not book your flight or travel arrangements until we have confirmed the tour as running.

What's not included?
  • Hotel Single Room Supplement - £110.00 (Optional)
  • Travel to / from Budapest
Itinerary

Day One

Arrival. No formal visits have been arranged for today. The ‘early birds’ can keep themselves entertained at train and Metro ‘hotspots.’ Alternatively, there are the three busy termini of Keleti, Nyugati or Deli. Or the ‘Mecca’ that is Kelenfold where you can see a vast amount of both passenger and freight traffic.

Day Two

The first BHEV line we cover is H5 from Batthyany ter (Metro 2) to Szentendre. Here will visit Szentendre BHEV Depot and the Budapest Urban Transport Museum. The afternoon sees our attention drawn to lines H8/H9. From Ors vezer ter (Metro 2), H9 extends to Csomar. We alight at Cinkota where we visit the depot. Here you have a choice, you can either travel on line H8 to the terminus at Godollo or stay at Cinkta. The units on line H9 will repeat after approximately 70 minutes. No units stable at the end of lines H8 or H9.

Day Three

Today we cover the two BHEV lines in the south of Budapest. First is H7 and a ride to Csepel for a depot visit. Returning north we stop off at Szabadkikoto to view the locos in the container terminal. The final line is H6 which extends from Kozvagohid to Rackeve where our final BHEV depot visit takes place. The days travel will conclude at approximately 5.00pm and the remainder of the day will be yours, anyone for Kelenfold?

Day Four

By today our travels around the city will have resulted in numerous Tram and Metro sightings. Now you will be able to maximise as we ‘blitz’ the Tram and Metro ‘hotspots.’ Szell Kalman ter and Moricz Zigmond Korter are very busy for Trams and recommended locations for the peak periods. However, you may wish to cover your own itinerary. Suggested locations are the Budapest Underground Railroad Museum, situated at Deak Ferenc Metro Interchange. The Budapest Castle Hill Funicular (Budavavi Silko) which is near the Chain Bridge or the Hungarian Museum of Science, Transport and Technology. OR For the non-tram enthusiasts, we may organise depot visits outside Budapest, if sufficient interest is shown. Any suggestions?

Day Five

An intense day in and around Budapest starts with a visit to Keleti depot. This is followed by the main MAV depot in Budapest, Ferencvaros and the adjacent yard which will hold 20+ ‘privateers.’ Our next destination is Vasuttortenti Maygor Park a very impressive railway museum. Numerous ‘Privateers’ can normally be found in the yards adjacent to the museum. Visits to Istvantelek Works remains off the itinerary due to the poor state of the building. Eszaki depot remains doubtful because of rebuilding works, but time will tell. Then we are off to the hills to visit the Children’ Railway and the depot at Huvosvolgy. We travel the line to Szechenyi-hegy and descend the hill via the Budapest Cog-Wheel Railway (Fogaskerku) to Varosmajor and the lines depot for a visit.

Day Six

Dispersal day. OR rail transfer from Budapest to Brno to join the Czech Charter Train. Subject to sufficient demand, we will endeavour to arrange a cheaper group fare.
