The Schweizer Deutsch Hotspots Tour
£697.15
An eight-day tour by service trains, featuring static observations of passing freight and passenger services at busy principal locations in Germany and Switzerland.
The popular Member’s Profile feature of STARS Magazines, in addition to sharing views amongst members, can also be revealing as to the individual’s preferences and aspirations. When asked if you could spend an afternoon at any station in the world, where would that be, it is no great surprise that Olten is answered more often than not. It is arguably the most prolific location in Switzerland to watch both passenger and freight traffic, and on this tour you have a full day, plus an evening and morning peak to enjoy. One more to tick off your wish list? Based on this busy north-south corridor between Karlsruhe and Basel, our choice of Mannheim and Freiburg for two nights each, affords the opportunity to walk only a few yards (OK then, metres!) in order to take up position to observe the traffic passing in front of you.
Whilst minimal effort spotting will not be to everyone’s liking, the main depots are not ignored and will be covered commensurate with your preferences. Flexibility will be very much a feature of the tour, and one thing is certain, whether you prefer the ’depot bash’, the more sedate approach, or a mixture of both, there will be so much for you on this tour. However, those who are happy to ‘go with the flow’ should have no concerns about being left to their own devices. Any variations in the itinerary will be by consensus and will have a STARS officer leading, particularly at depots.
You will need to make your own travel arrangements to join this tour. However, should you choose to fly, Frankfurt is not only served by worldwide National carriers, but also a whole host of low-cost airlines that might suit your budget.
TICKETS
Travel will be by rail throughout, and it will be the responsibility of the individual to obtain suitable tickets for the desired routes. Unfortunately, there do not appear to be any suitable InterRail or Rover Tickets to cover the several days travel covered by this tour. In consequence our suggestions are:
Days 1,3 & 4. Use the Mannheim area “Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar” ticket. Similar to the London Travelcard this covers up to six zones in the area. Central Zones covering Mannheim and Ludwigshafen is 19 euros. All zones covering from Homburg in the west to Wurzburg in the east and costs 39 euros. Both tickets are for up to 5 people.
Days 2 & 5. Use the “Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket” (German Day Ticket), available from 09.00 through to 03.00 the following morning. This ticket costs 46 euros for up to five people.
Both of the above tickets are valid on all S-Bahn, RB, IRE and RE services NOT IC or ICE. In order to obtain tickets at a cheaper rate, when a clear picture emerges of the ‘loading’ for this tour, we will organise groups comprised of those with similar ‘targets’ to travel on one ticket.
Within Switzerland travel will be by local tickets. A return from Basel to Olten is approximately £17.00.
Note. Train fares quoted are 2024 levels that might increase prior to the tour.
Do not book your flight or travel arrangements until we have confirmed the tour as running.

Itinerary
Day One
By whatever route you choose to join the tour, our hotel at Mannheim will be the meeting point. We hope that you will not be too fatigued by your travels today as we take the opportunity to visit both Bw. Mannheim and Bw Ludwigshafen late afternoon and/or early evening. How many locomotives will be found on the former? It will certainly be in excess of three figures. Need a rest already? You’ll certainly get it at the InterCity Hotel, Mannheim, our ‘home’ for the next two nights and situated next to the Hauptbahnhof.
Day Two
Refreshed by a good night’s sleep and hearty breakfast you will, no doubt, be straight onto the platform ready for the first of our morning ‘peaks.’ The tram enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that there is a position on the station from where both trains and trams can be observed. It is possible that nothing will persuade you to leave your vantage point. However, there is an alternative that might just ‘tear’ you away for two or three hours. Karlsruhe and Offenburg Hbfs (although to be passed tomorrow) can be explored today, particularly as Bw Offenburg and the yards cannot be viewed when passing! Also being the junction of two main lines, it is also a good location to spend time. You may have other preferences of your own but do try to be back for the evening ‘peak.’
Day Three
After the morning ‘rush hour’ it is time to move on to Freiburg. You will have the choice of completing the journey direct or ‘hop on / hop off’ as to your preference. Perhaps a day at Offenburg if you did not cover it yesterday. Our hotel, the InterCity Hotel, Freiburg, is part of the Hauptbahnhof, and where we spend the next two nights. Another evening ‘rush hour to cover and more good news for the tram people. From either the railway platforms or the elevated tram stop, both trains and trams can be monitored..
Day Four
After the morning ‘peak’ has passed you can either take up your observation position or perhaps a visit to Bw Freiburg may well be to your liking. Afterwards you may consider a run down to Basel Bad Bahnhof where spending a little time observing activity should not disappoint. Perhaps also a visit to Bw Haltingen or a view as you pass. However, it’s an option you may wish to turn down if you have other ideas, mindful that we do pass this area tomorrow.
Day Five
After consuming breakfast and observing the morning ‘peak’ we board our train for Basel, Once there we visit left luggage in order to lighten our load when we visit Basel Wolf Depot. Following on, we will spend extended time observing the movements on and off Muttenz Yard. When we can resist the urge no longer, we will leave for the very short journey to Olten making sure we are there for the evening ‘rush hour’. Having said that, there is an opinion amongst many that traffic through the station never slows down! Anyway, this will be our home for the next two days. Once more we have secured our preferred hotel, the Amaris Hotel Olten. Many of the rooms have windows overlooking the lines into the station and we will be allocated those rooms. Three photos revolving at the top of this post were taken from a window of our Olten Hotel. Very convenient when the rain is falling! However, the rooms are limited by number and, as such, will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. You are advised to book early to stand a reasonable chance of securing such a room.
Day Six
Here you are at an enthusiast’s ‘Mecca’ for the entire day, but you may consider taking a stroll down to Olten Depot and the surrounding yards and sidings.
Day Seven
It will have been a short (but we hope sweet) visit, but today we must return. We have chosen a midday departure in order to maximise the stay and will be back in Freiburg by late afternoon. You may wish to vary the timing of your return to suit your own agenda. Our final night is spent back at the InterCity Hotel, Freiburg.
